Abstract

Objective:

To investigate the clinical efficacy of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride in acute bacterial sinusitis and its mechanism of action. Secondary objectives included: to assess the clinical efficacy of ciprofloxacin in acute bacterial sinusitis and to evaluate the impact of ciprofloxacin on antibiotic resistance.

Study design:

We recruited participants from 3 different hospitals. Participants were recruited in the outpatient setting and patients were admitted to the outpatient clinic. We enrolled patients with a sinus infection of the respiratory tract. The study protocol included a total of 30 patients who were randomized to ciprofloxacin and placebo. Patients were given either 10 mg of ciprofloxacin or placebo in a two-week period. After the second week, the patients were discharged to their own homes and the patients who were still in hospital were asked to continue with the treatment. The analysis was conducted using intent-to-treat (ITT) population. The ciprofloxacin was statistically significantly different among the three groups (p<0.001) but there was no statistical difference between ciprofloxacin and placebo (p=0.831).
